TrueDark Glasses Review: Blocking Junk Light at 71
At 71, I’m stacking every edge I can to protect my sleep—and my shot at becoming the first human to hit 200. One of the simplest, most impactful additions to my evening routine? TrueDark glasses.
I put them on every night, usually 1–2 hours before bed, and I genuinely like them. They’re comfortable, effective, and have noticeably improved how quickly I fall asleep and how rested I feel in the morning.
What Makes TrueDark Different?
Most “blue blockers” only filter blue light. TrueDark—created by biohacking pioneer Dave Asprey—go further. Their patent-pending red lenses block 99% of blue, green, and violet “junk light” (the wavelengths that suppress melatonin most aggressively).
Artificial lights, phones, TVs, and LEDs blast these wavelengths well into the evening, tricking your brain into thinking it’s still daytime. Result? Delayed melatonin release, fragmented sleep, and slower recovery overnight.
TrueDark simulates true darkness, signaling your brain: “Time to wind down.”
My Real-World Results
Before TrueDark:
I’d often lie awake for 30–60 minutes scrolling or watching something “just for a bit.”
Ultrahuman Ring showed inconsistent melatonin onset and occasional awake periods.
After adding TrueDarks nightly:
I fall asleep faster—usually within 15–20 minutes.
Deeper, more restorative sleep stages (confirmed by my ring data).
Morning readiness scores trending higher.
Bonus: Less eye strain from evening screen time.
I pair them with my other wind-down hacks—dim red lighting, no food 3+ hours before bed, magnesium, and a cool bedroom—and the combo is powerful.
Why This Matters for Longevity
Quality sleep is non-negotiable for extended healthspan. It drives:
Autophagy and cellular repair
Hormone balance (growth hormone, cortisol)
Reduced inflammation
Better insulin sensitivity
Cognitive protection
Disrupt your circadian rhythm long-term, and you accelerate aging. At my age, I’m not gambling with junk light.
Why I Wear Blue Light Blocking Glasses at 71
Here's the part most blue light articles skip, because they're written for gamers and programmers, not for people my age.
Sleep gets harder as you get older. Ask anyone past 60 — falling asleep takes longer, staying asleep is less reliable, and the deep stages get harder to come by. Researchers are still working out how much of that is the eye, how much is hormones, and how much is just decades of habits. I'm not going to pretend I can settle that for you.
What I can tell you is that the problem is real, and almost everyone I know my age is living with it. So when something cheap and low-risk might protect the wind-down window, I'll take that bet. That's the whole approach behind this project — stack small edges, measure what you can, keep the ones that hold up.
These are one of the cheapest things in my protocol. No prescription, no side effects, no ongoing cost after the purchase. My ring data got better after I added them. That's not a clinical trial — it's one guy's n of 1. But it's my n, and it's the one I have to live in.
It’s Now Locked Into My Protocol
TrueDark Glasses are officially part of my public longevity stack. You’ll find them listed at https://garyleland.com/data
Go steal the whole protocol. Copy it. Tweak it. Then try to out-sleep me—I dare you.
Remember: I’m not a doctor, just a stubborn 71-year-old refusing to age like everyone else. Consult your physician before making changes.
