Centuries Old and Still Cold: Drinking Glacier Water at Dawes Glacier
A couple of years back, a rapper knelt on an Alaska glacier, dipped a bottle into a blue meltpool, drank it on camera, and the internet came unglued. Comments filled with warnings about parasites and certain death. A glaciologist at the University of Alaska Fairbanks was asked about it and basically shrugged: a melt stream on a glacier, he said, is about as clean as water gets.
I thought about that video the whole time I was standing in Endicott Arm looking at Dawes Glacier.
Dawes sits at the head of a fjord that runs more than thirty miles inland, about forty-five miles south of Juneau, inside the Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness in the Tongass National Forest. The ice comes off the Stikine Icefield near the Alaska-Canada boundary and flows northwest roughly twenty miles to tidewater. It is a tidewater glacier, which means the ice doesn't drain away as a stream — it breaks off the face and drops into salt water. The fjord in front of it is a floating field of debris ice.
Which is where my drink came from. We were on a boat tour, close enough to the face to feel the cold rolling off it, and the crew scooped a chunk of ice out of the water and broke it down into pieces for our glasses. No cooler. No ice machine. They reached over the side and got it.
That's a good bar story. And I'm 71 years old, and I've spent the last few years testing everything I put in my body, so before I drank it I wanted to know what was actually in the glass.
The answer surprised me. Not because glacier water is bad. Because almost everything people believe about why it's good is backwards.
Glacier Water Is Not “Mineral Rich” — It's the Opposite
The pitch you hear on deck is that this ice spent centuries absorbing ancient minerals. That is not how freezing works. When water freezes slowly, the growing ice crystal pushes dissolved minerals out — calcium and magnesium get excluded from the solid and concentrate in whatever liquid is left behind. The result is that glacial meltwater carries very little mineral content, with total dissolved solids typically under 50 mg/L.
For comparison, Evian runs around 357 mg/L and Fiji around 210. U.S. rules require at least 250 mg/L before a bottled water can legally be called mineral water, and distilled water sits at zero. Glacier melt lands far closer to the distilled end of that scale than the mineral end.
So if you're drinking glacier water for the minerals, you have it exactly upside down. You are drinking it for the absence of things.
Which Is Also Why It Tastes So Good
Minerals are what give water flavor. Strip them out, chill it to just above freezing, and remove the chlorine your city supply uses, and your tongue reads that as clean. It's a subtraction, not an addition. Add the expectation effect of drinking something that fell as snow before your grandparents were born, while a wall of blue ice cracks like artillery behind you, and the taste test is over before the water hits your lips.
I'm not knocking it. It was excellent. I just want to be honest about the mechanism.
The Fizz Is Real, and It's the Best Part
Here is the detail I loved. Glacier ice is compressed snow, and it traps air bubbles under enormous pressure. Measurements have found pressures inside those bubbles ranging from one atmosphere to more than twenty. When the ice melts, they burst. Sailors and submariners have a name for the sound: bergy seltzer, also called ice sizzle. NASA's glacier glossary describes it as a crackling like soda or Rice Krispies. Sit quiet in Endicott Arm surrounded by brash ice and you can hear the whole fjord doing it at once.
That is centuries-old air escaping into your glass. It does nothing for your healthspan. I don't care. It is the single coolest fact I picked up on this trip.
Now the Part Nobody Puts on the Label
Glaciers are atmospheric archives. Whatever was in the air when the snow fell got buried with it, including the industrial chemistry of the twentieth century. Persistent organic pollutants like PCBs and DDT evaporate in warm air, condense when it gets cold, and accumulate in glaciers — heaviest in the glaciers nearest to where those chemicals were originally emitted. As the ice melts, the cargo comes back out. Swiss researchers found dioxins, PCBs and DDT in the sediment of a glacier-fed lake, and Italian work found chlorinated pesticides roughly ten times higher in a glacier-fed stream than in a neighboring non-glacial one during the late-summer months when ice melt dominates the flow.
Southeast Alaska ice is far cleaner than Alpine ice — the Alps sat downwind of industrial Europe for a century. But “pristine” is a marketing word, not a measurement.
So Is Glacier Water Safe to Drink?
The glaciologist's answer was about a melt pool sitting on top of clean ice. Dawes ice is a different situation: it calves into salt water and floats. The ice itself is fresh — an iceberg is compressed snow, not frozen seawater — but the outside of it has been bobbing in a fjord where harbor seals use the icebergs as breeding and whelping grounds. The interior is the part worth drinking, which, as it happens, is most of what you get when someone breaks a chunk down into pieces. Chipping past the outside isn't showmanship.
Set against that, the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation does not recommend drinking untreated surface water at all, and that is the responsible official position. Both answers are correct; they are answering different questions. Mine had one more variable than the guy on the meltpool, and I drank it anyway.
What I'm Taking Home
Nothing, protocol-wise. I am not going to start buying iceberg water. Your minerals come from food, not from your glass — and if ultra-low-mineral water were a real problem, every household running reverse osmosis would be in trouble, and they are not.
But I drank water that fell as snow before anyone in my family line was born, in front of the glacier that made it, and it crackled while I drank it. Some things you do because they are worth doing, not because they move a biomarker.
