MCT Oil in My Coffee: Fuel for the Brain at 71
MCT oil is cup two of my four morning coffees. One tablespoon, stirred into the cup, every single morning.
I did a short the other day about the creatine cup and got a lot of response, so here is the next one.
Why Does the Brain Need Its Own Fuel Source?
Because it is a small organ with an enormous appetite.
Your brain is roughly two percent of your body weight and burns something like twenty percent of your energy. It is the single most expensive thing you are running. That is the same reason creatine ended up in one of my cups, and it is the reason MCT oil ended up in another.
What Does MCT Oil Actually Do?
It converts to ketones quickly, and ketones are a fuel your brain will use without waiting on breakfast.
Medium chain triglycerides take a shorter metabolic route than most fats. They go to the liver and come out as ketones fast enough to matter within the hour. That is the whole appeal for me, first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach.
MCT oil does a good deal more than that, and I am not going to run through all of it here. I wrote the longer version up separately: MCT oil for brain energy, in detail.
How Much Do I Take?
One tablespoon, in one cup of coffee, once a day.
Not in a smoothie, not straight off the spoon, and not spread across the day. One cup, one tablespoon, first thing.
If you are starting out, begin with a teaspoon instead. A full tablespoon on an empty stomach on day one will send you looking for a bathroom. Work up over a week or two.
Has It Actually Done Anything for Me?
My brain fog used to be bad. A year into doing all of this, it is dramatically better, and the difference in clarity is not subtle.
I want to be careful here. I changed a lot of things at once, and I cannot hand MCT oil the credit for that on its own. What I can tell you is that it is one of the pieces, I have kept it in the routine for a year, and I would notice if it were gone.
That is the honest version. A small part of something that added up.
The Rest of the Four Cups
Cup one is cocoa. Cup two is MCT oil and grass-fed ghee. Cup three is a ketone powder. Cup four is fifteen grams of creatine with a pinch of salt.
There is no magic to the order. I am just working through them one short at a time.
The full routine, including the beans and the plastic-free setup I brew it in, is here: my four-cup morning coffee protocol.
