Lemon Water First Thing at 71: What the Water Does, and What the Lemon Actually Gives You
First thing every morning, before coffee, before breakfast, before anything else, I walk into the kitchen and drink a large glass of water with fresh lemon squeezed into it.
That is the whole habit. It is not complicated and it is not a longevity drink with twelve ingredients in it. But there is a reason it comes first.
You Wake Up Down a Pint
By the time I get up I have gone seven or eight hours without drinking anything. You lose water all night just by breathing, more of it if the room is warm or you sweat, and more again the first time you go to the bathroom. Most people wake up somewhere in the neighbourhood of a pound of fluid down.
So before I put anything else in, I put that back.
Why Being Down on Water Matters
Your blood is mostly water — the plasma that carries everything around is about ninety percent water on its own. Your brain runs around three quarters water. Fall behind and you feel it: the headache, the stiffness, the fog you blame on a bad night of sleep when it may be nothing more than dehydration.
Two studies out of the University of Connecticut put numbers on how little it takes. In healthy young women, a fluid loss of about 1.4 percent of body weight was enough to degrade mood, make tasks feel harder, hurt concentration and bring on headaches. A matching study in healthy young men found the same range hurt vigilance and working memory. One to two percent. That is a pound or two on a man my size, which is roughly what a night of sleep costs you.
There is a circulation angle too. Low on fluid, blood is thicker, and thicker blood is harder work for the heart to move. At 71, with the heart being one of the two systems I care most about protecting, that is not a small thing.
Now the Lemon
Here is where I have to correct myself, because I have said a bigger number out loud before.
Half a lemon squeezed into a glass is about 25 ml of juice. Going by USDA figures for raw lemon juice, that is roughly 9 or 10 milligrams of vitamin C — about ten percent of the 90 mg a man my age needs in a day. Not a quarter. The bigger numbers you see quoted are for the whole lemon including the pulp and the membrane, which nobody eats out of a water glass.
Ten percent before I have eaten anything is still worth having. I would just rather give you the real figure than a flattering one.
What that vitamin C does is worth knowing:
- It is what your body builds collagen with, and collagen is skin, tendons, and the walls of your arteries.
- It helps you pull iron out of plant food. Taken alongside a meal, vitamin C can multiply non-heme iron absorption several times over.
- It is an antioxidant, though so is most of what I eat, and I would not take lemon water for that reason alone.
And the honest reason it goes in: I like the taste, and because I like the taste I drink the whole glass. Every morning. A perfect habit you skip is worth nothing.
One Warning, From Experience
Lemon juice is acid. Not as harsh as vinegar, but acid. And acid wears down tooth enamel, which does not grow back.
I learned that the expensive way with apple cider vinegar — a doctor told me to stop drinking it, and I wrote up what happened there. The same logic applies here, just at a lower dose. Dilute it in a full glass rather than shooting it, drink it reasonably quickly instead of sipping it over an hour, rinse with plain water afterward, and do not brush your teeth for half an hour after.
Why the Simple Things Get Skipped
With this project I am always testing what might buy me more healthy years, and some of it gets complicated. But I do not want to get so caught up chasing the latest research that I skip the basics.
Hydration. Walking. Sleep. Getting outside. Moving every day.
None of that is exciting. Nobody is announcing a breakthrough because I squeezed a lemon this morning. But it is something I can do every single day, and I have been doing it long enough now that it is not a decision any more.
One glass of lemon water will not get me to 200. Neither will one walk. The right small things, repeated for years, are what I am betting on.
Keep Going
The rest of the morning is in my dead-simple morning protocol, and what I drink after this is in the four coffees. Everything I take is on my protocols page, the training side is under fitness, and every number that comes back from a test goes up on test and stats.
Tell me in the comments what you drink before your coffee. I want to know what everybody else is doing.
Stay sovereign, stay healthy,
Gary
A note from Gary: I am not a doctor, and I am definitely not your doctor. I am a 71-year-old man running a 129-year experiment on himself in public, and everything here is what I do, not a recommendation for what you should do. Talk to your physician before changing anything.
